Description
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a rugged, powerful, and muscular retriever. This breed loves the outdoors and is dependable. The Chesapeake is valued for its bright and happy disposition and affectionate protective nature.


Size
Male Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are 23-26 inches and females are 21-24 inches. Adult males are 65-80 pounds lbs and females are 55-70 lbs.


Coat
This breeds coat is thick and short. The harsh outer coat and dense wooly undercoat will resist water. The coat should not hold water at all.


Color
The standard colors of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever include the following; brown, dark brown, dark deadgrass, deadgrass, light brown, light deadgrass, sedge, and tan.


Temperament
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a friendly, intelligent and obedient dog. They are also courageous and loving.


Care
The dense, short-haired coat is easy to care for. Brush with a firm brush to remove loose hairs. Bath occasionally, but not too often.


Exercise
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever needs a good deal of activity, including swimming if at all possible. They can show bad behavior if they become bored.


Training
This breed needs tough training to prevent behavior problems. They are slow to learn, but necessary.


Shedding
This breed is an average shedder.


Barking & Howling
Chesapeake Bay Retrieve bark by nature as they have been bred to protect their owners property. They are average barkers.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for Chesapeake Bay Retrieve can live about 10-12 years.


Health
Chesapeake Bay Retrieves are prone to eye problems and hip dysplasia.
